How to measure for stairs

- Always measure in centimetres.
Required Length = (Tread + Riser = Measurement for 1 step) x No of steps
What is a tread and what is a riser?
Simply put, the tread is the part your feet are placed, that you step onto.
- Starting with the bottom step, measure the depth of the tread (inwards)
- Be sure to extend the tape measure all the way to the outer edge of the step
- You should add approximately 5cm to your step measurement to allow for covering edges or extra needed for underlay
The riser of the step is the height between one step and the next.
- From the bottom of your stairs measure the height of your very first step
- Add together the tread and riser measurement of this step
- Multiply this number by the number of steps you have to cover
This equals the length required for your carpet.
Measure the width of your step.
Measure the width of your step and add at least 5cm to know how wide the piece of carpet must be.
This equals the width required for your carpet.
The carpet you choose will typically come much wider than what you actually need.
This isn’t an issue, your carpet fitter will cut down the piece to your specified width.
- Don’t forget stairs with winders or half landings will need additional carpet to satisfy changes in pile direction and shape difference.
